Shadows of the Mind: A Search for the Missing Science of Consciousness
Science
A sequel to The Emperor's New Mind in which Penrose argues that human consciousness involves non-computable processes that cannot be replicated by any algorithmic computer. He builds his case partly on an interpretation of Gödel's incompleteness theorem and proposes that quantum-gravitational effects in the brain's microtubules underlie understanding. The book extends his thesis that the mind is not merely a computational machine.
